Submitting your Site to the Search Engines (for Free)

By marc • Apr 17th, 2008 • Category: SEO

This evening I had the need to get this site submitted to all the major search engines. Since this site is brand new I have no inbound links, so of course I needed to get the ball rolling. It’s been awhile since I had to start getting a website ranked from ground zero, so I had to use my google-fu to find all the resources about going through this process again (probably been a few years since I had done this).

Naturally my initial searches yielded in many “Search Engine Submission Services”. Being the frugal person I am, I definitely didn’t want to pay someone for something that I can do myself in a matter of minutes. I’m not really sure if there is an advantage to using any of these paid services, but my gut feeling is that they may be worth it if a site owner/webmaster is truly lazy.

Below I have compiled a listing of the various links to the submission pages of the top search engines and some free services for bulk submission.

A few notes to anyone who is submitting brand-new un-indexed websites to search engines for the first time:

  1. It will probably take weeks/months after initial submission before the search engines begin to crawl your site. So don’t expect to magically rank number one for the search term “muppet song lyrics”.
  2. Resubmitting your site over and over again every day or week won’t help, but you may want to try again if you don’t see any results after a number of months.
  3. Make sure to categorize your site correctly and provide a proper description for your site if you need to submit this information.
  4. Submitting your website to the search engines is completely independent of making sure your site follows all the proven standards of SEO (good content, title tags, clean urls, etc. etc.)
